All About African Tropical Fishes

There are different species of tropical fishes found in Africa, South America, and different parts of Asia. The most famous among Aquarist is African cichlids. They are the most colorful, strong, and active group of fishes. African cichlids belong to the Cichlidae family and available in more than 1300 species. They can be easily found in various lakes of Africa especially, Tanganyika, Malawi and, Victoria lake. Aquarist shows a special interest in keeping African cichlids, preferably because of their interesting behavior.

African cichlids are of many colors and patterns, so a fish keeper can decide which color and pattern they want for their aquarium. The Malawi cichlids are some of the most brilliantly colored fishes. These fishes are very active, so whenever they feel any movement outside their aquarium, they follow it. The average lifespan of African cichlid is 10-15 years.

Sometimes these fishes also show aggressive behavior due to different reasons like insufficiency of food, less space in the aquarium, and many more. African butterfly, Yellow African, African peacock cichlids, Orange zebra cichlids are some of the most common species of African cichlids. The males of this group of fishes are more colorful than females, as the color becomes brighter during the process like mating or when they show aggression.

These fishes have teeth and their sets of teeth depending upon their diet. Some of them have sharp teeth for hunting other smaller fishes, while others have small teeth for just scraping off algae from the rocks.

These fishes need an aquarium which must be bigger, with a filtration system. The average pH of the water should be 7.5-9.0 and the water should have a temperature between 75-86° F. Aquarist prefer to décor the tank with lots of rocks and live plants to provide them a real sense of natural habitat. Aquarists love to have these fishes in their aquarium.
